Zarnish’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 3868 life-saving heart surgeries/interventions. This is the success story of 1-year-old Zarnish, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).
An ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. A large, long-standing ASD can damage both the heart and lungs. Symptoms include irregular heartbeats, fatigue, swelling etc.
Signs and symptoms of an ASD started appearing when Zarnish was just an infant. Her family, who reside in the outskirts of Lahore, were concerned for her health and immediately took her to one of our partner hospitals, Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO) Lahore.
Following a proper check-up and an Echocardiography (ECHO), cardiac ultrasound, the hole in her heart was discovered. Life-saving heart surgery was recommended.
The required procedure, called an ASD closure, is one that Zarnish’s father found unaffordable. He works as a rickshaw driver and supports his entire family, which includes his wife and 2 daughters.
In desperate need of financial support, he was referred to us. Being a leading organization in the field of CHD, we are always fully prepared to step in and save lives of children like Zarnish.
Our team is highly cooperative and efficient. After meeting with the family, a quick registration process followed and the surgery was scheduled at the same hospital they had initially visited, BIHO Lahore.
The funds for the heart surgery were also swiftly arranged as we have a tremendous donor base to call upon. These are both individuals and organisations who believe in our cause. We are grateful beyond measure for their support.
A brilliant team of healthcare professional was on board to carry out the highly intricate heart surgery and as Zarnish was about to go in to experience probably the most pivotal time of her life, her family was told to stay strong and keep the faith. They showed remarkable strength during the whole ordeal.
The few hours during which the surgery lasted was immensely difficult for Zarnish’s loved ones, but once it was over, we were thrilled to inform them that it was a huge success! Zarnish was now a ‘CHD Warrior’.
Not only did she undergo life-saving heart surgery successfully, but because of her fighting spirit, the lives of her family members had also been transformed. They were all full or praise for our organization and the work that we are doing for children born with CHD in Pakistan.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
