Hussain’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 3811 life-saving heart surgeries/interventions. This is the success story of 1-year-old Hussain, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 upper chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Shortly after birth, Hussain started suffering from the symptoms of VSD, which include shortness of breath and paleness. Distressed after seeing this, his parents took him for a medical checkup in their hometown of Swat.
Their local doctor then recommended visiting Peshawar and following thorough examinations, Hussain’s family was told that he had a potentially life-threatening CHD which required immediate attention.
The treatment that was required to save Hussain’s life was a relatively expensive procedure called a VSD Closure, one that his father could not afford. He works as a driver who solely supports his whole family, which includes his wife and 4 children.
For financial support, the family was referred to us. They wasted no time whatsoever and made their way to Lahore. They were going to do everything possible to save Hussain’s life.
We are amongst the premier organisations in the field of CHD. Our dedicated team, after meeting with Hussain’s family and studying the case extensively, decided to schedule his surgery at one of our partner hospitals, Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO) Lahore.
Our registration process is swift and with an incredible donor base to call upon, the required funds are also arranged in practically no time. A world-class team of healthcare professionals was to carry out Hussain’s surgery.
Once all formalities were taken care of and Hussain was going in for surgery, his parents were given assurances that he was in the very best of hands. All they had to do now was hope and pray for the best.
A highly intricate procedure which lasted a few hours then took place and after its completion, we were delighted to inform Hussain’s family that he was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who made it! We were trusted with saving his life, and thankfully, were successful in doing so.
His family, especially his father who had contributed to around a third of the required funds, were grateful beyond measure. A path to a normal life had been paved for them and they left tremendously happy with their whole experience.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
