Bilal’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 3933 life-saving heart surgeries/interventions. This is the success story of 2-year-old Bilal, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF).
In TOF, 4 related heart defects affect blood flow. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs. Low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body and not enough oxygen can reach body tissues. Children with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the skin, lips and fingernails.
When Bilal started to experience some of the symptoms of his CHD, his father immediately took him to a local doctor in their hometown of Rahim Yar Khan. Following a proper check-up and medical tests, Bilal’s potentially life-threatening heart disease was discovered and surgery would be required to save his life.
Bilal’s parents were devastated after the news broke. They could not fathom a life without him and asked their doctor what they should do to next. They were first asked to go to the prestigious Children’s Hospital in Lahore. However, the waiting list there meant that they had to look for other options.
They made their way back to Rahim Yar Khan and it was then that their doctor told them to go to Lahore again and visit us. They wasted no time whatsoever and contacted us for a meeting in the hope that we would pave the way for them.
Being a premier organization in the field of CHD, we were always going to happily step in for Bilal. In our initial meeting with his father, he informed us that he was a labourer who would need financial support.
Blessed with an incredible donor base, arranging the required funds was not a problem for us. We also swiftly took care of all other hospital-related formalities and within a month, scheduled his heart surgery at one of our partner hospitals, the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH).
A world-class team of healthcare professionals was on board and everything possible had been done in terms of preparations. Bilal’s family was told to just pray for everything to go well and the surgery to be a success.
The few hours that the procedure lasted was truly a testing time for all of Bilal’s loved ones. However, once complete, we were delighted to inform them that all their prayers had been answered and Bilal had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’.
His parents were thankful beyond measure and expressed their immense gratitude to us for saving Bilal’s life. We always appreciate the tremendously kind words at the time of discharge and will always remain driven to healing hearts of deserving children like Bilal.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
You can join us as well and donate towards child heart treatment or hospital construction. Together, let’s do our utmost to save young lives and help shape a brighter future. Play your part, save little hearts: https://pchf.org.pk/donate/
