Hassan’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 4020 life-saving child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 6-year-old Hassan, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF).
In TOF, 4 related heart defects affect blood flow. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs. Low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body and not enough oxygen can reach body tissues. Children with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the skin, lips and fingernails.
Around a year before his surgery, Hassan was experiencing chest pain and started getting tired more than usual while playing. His skin colour was also turning blue which is a clear sign of CHD.
His parents, naturally worried about their child’s health, took him to the renowned Children’s Hospital in Lahore where he had to get an Echocardiography (ECHO), a cardiac ultrasound. The results revealed that he had a CHD that required heart surgery.
This was devastating news for Hassan’s family and to add to their distress, they were informed about the estimated cost of the treatment that was needed. His father, who works as a labourer and solely supports his whole family, needed financial support.
As they were searching for options, one of their relatives told them about PCHF, and they wasted no time in contacting us. Being among the most experienced organizations in the country when it comes to CHD, we were ready to help.
As we are blessed with an exceptional donor base, both individuals and organizations who believe in our mission, arranging funds for Hassan’s family would not be a problem. Following a meeting with our patient registration team, all formalities were swiftly taken care of.
Hassan’s heart surgery was scheduled at our very own world-class Cardiac Care Center at the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH), with a brilliant team of CHD healthcare professionals on board. In terms of preparation, everything possible had been done.
During the complex procedure, Hassan’s family was a true symbol of strength as they prayed for his life. Following its completion, we were thrilled to inform them Hassan showed tremendous resilience and had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’.
His family, especially his mother, were full of praise for everyone they interacted with at PCHF and mentioned how caring everyone was during their time with us. They wished us continued success in all our projects and hoped that this experience would help Hassan become a virtuous human being.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute, as a PCHF Board Member.
You can join us as well and donate towards child heart treatment or hospital construction. Together, let’s do our utmost to save young lives and help shape a brighter future. Play your part, save little hearts: https://pchf.org.pk/donate/
