Ayaan’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 3667 life-saving heart surgeries/interventions. This is the success story of Ayaan, who as an infant was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 upper chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Just months after being born in the beautiful region of Swat, baby Ayaan had a stomach issue that led to various other health concerns. His doctor, after careful observation, told his parents to get his heart checked through Echocardiography (ECHO), a cardiac ultrasound.
The ECHO revealed a heart condition that was potentially life-threatening for Ayaan. Surgery was recommended and that left his parents distraught. After confiding in a few relatives, they learned of PCHF and Dr. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Surgeon and PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member, based in Lahore.
Ayaan’s parents wasted no time and rushed their way to Lahore for a meeting with Dr. Asim. They told him their entire story and how they would need financial support for their child’s surgery.
Ayaan’s father was jobless at the time and had a family comprising of 6 children to take care of. Despite his difficult financial circumstances, he somehow had managed to arrange a major chunk of the required funds for the surgery but still needed help for the rest. That’s where we come in.
Blessed with a remarkable donor base, we can swiftly arrange funds for deserving families affected by CHD. Additionally, we provide the highest quality of care as we have a world-class team of healthcare professionals on board and partner hospitals throughout the country as well.
Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore is one of those and Ayaan’s treatment was scheduled to take place there once all the funds were arranged. Dr. Asim was to perform the highly intricate procedure himself, alongside a brilliant allied healthcare team.
With all hospital and accommodation related formalities taken care of, preparations were complete and Ayaan was to go through a procedure called Pulmonary Artery Banding. This is for treating children who have a VSD with Pulmonary Hypertension.
Once Ayaan went in for surgery, his fighting spirit was put to the test, with all his loved ones in support. Hours later, we were thrilled to inform them that little Ayaan had emerged from the procedure as a ‘CHD Warrior’!
His family was delighted beyond measure and told us how happy they were with our entire team, from the start of the whole process till the time of discharge. They even said that despite their financial difficulties, they would try to donate to PCHF whenever they could. A truly commendable statement.
Ayaan could now go on to live a normal life and dream big like all the other children around him. Being able to save young lives like Ayaan’s is something we consider a true privilege. Without the support of our donors though, this would not be possible, and we are grateful to them for supporting our cause.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
You can join us as well and donate towards child heart treatment or hospital construction. Together, let’s do our utmost to save young lives and help shape a brighter future. Play your part, save little hearts: https://pchf.org.pk/donate/
