Anaya’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 3801 life-saving heart surgeries/interventions. This is the success story of 7-year-old Anaya, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries (CCTGA).
CCTGA is a rare heart defect in which the heart’s lower half is reversed. The weaker, larger right ventricle grows on the heart’s left side and the stronger, smaller left ventricle grows on the heart’s right side. This condition can cause problems to the heart’s rhythm, valves and even lead to heart failure.
Almost a month after birth, Anaya was suffering from haematemesis (vomiting blood). That is a sight that is extremely distressing for any parent, especially those of a newborn. Her parents immediately took her to a local doctor for a checkup.
Following a thorough examination and visits to multiple doctors, her heart condition was diagnosed. Anaya then underwent treatment for years but heart surgery was inevitable. During all this time, her parents were continuously searching all over Pakistan for the best Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons.
They eventually made their way to Dr. Mohammad Asim Khan, who also happens to be a PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member. Dr. Asim told them about the work our organization does as the family needed financial support. Anaya’s father is a lawyer based in Rawalpindi who is the sole breadwinner in the family.
He was referred to us and being an organization that is considered amongst the very best when it comes to saving lives of children with CHD, we were happy to step in. Saving lives of deserving children like Anaya is our priority.
After a swift registration process, Anaya’s surgery was scheduled at our partner hospital, Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore. Dr. Asim was to carry out the surgery himself with a brilliant team of healthcare professionals alongside him.
Anaya’s parents were assured that she was in the best of hands and all they needed to do was pray for the surgery to be successful. Their daughter had been facing CHD for years and her spirit was to be tested one more time.
The intricate procedure lasted a few hours and once it was complete, we were delighted to inform Anaya’s loved ones that she had emerged from it as a ‘CHD Warrior’. The true care that she received from us had resulted in a fully healed heart!
Her family members, especially her inspirational father who had spent so much time searching for treatment options, were tremendously happy. They thanked us and our donors, as without them none of this would be possible. As Anaya was being discharged, the whole family was full of praise for us and eternally grateful for everything we had done.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
You can join us as well and donate towards child heart treatment or hospital construction. Together, let’s do our utmost to save young lives and help shape a brighter future. Play your part, save little hearts: https://pchf.org.pk/donate/
