Uzain’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) have helped fund 4129 life-saving child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 1-year-old Uzain, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 upper chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
A mere 3-4 months after birth, signs and symptoms of CHD started appearing in Uzain. He had cyanosis, which is when the skin, lips or nails turn blue due to a lack of oxygen in the blood.
His parents, fearing the worst, took him to Peshawar for a medical check-up. After a thorough examination, the doctor there recommended an Echocardiography (ECHO), a cardiac ultrasound.
The ECHO results confirmed the presence of a potentially life-threatening CHD. This was devastating news for Uzain’s parents and to make matters even worse, they were told about the relatively expensive treatment that was required as soon as possible.
Even though they were in a state of immense distress, they had no choice but to start searching for treatment options right away. After asking around, a doctor in Peshawar told them about PCHF and one of our partner hospitals in Lahore, Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO).
The family managed to schedule a meeting with us and made their way to our Head Office in Lahore. Uzain’s father told us that he is a labourer who solely supports his whole family in their hometown of Swabi. He was in desperate need of financial support.
Being a premier organization in the field of CHD that is blessed with an exceptional donor base, both organizations and individuals who believe in our cause, we were swiftly able to arrange funds for Uzain’s treatment. We also took care of all hospital and accommodation related formalities for the family.
Uzain’s heart surgery, a highly complex procedure, was scheduled at Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO) with a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals on board. Before he went in for surgery, his family was assured that he was in the very best of hands.
After a few extremely difficult hours during which Uzain was fighting for his life and his parents were praying for him, we were thrilled to tell them that he had overcome CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who could live a completely normal life like other children around him.
As they experienced moments of pure bliss, his loved ones felt grateful beyond measure and were tremendously impressed with the whole process they went through with us. At the time of discharge, they were full or praise for our entire team and we wished all of them a life filled with joy.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
