The Success Story Of A 1 Year-Old CHD Warrior, Ghulam Hassan

This is the incredible success story of young and valiant little 1 year-old, Ghulam Hassan, with Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF). At such a tender age, Ghulam Hassan was diagnosed with a unique type of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) known as, Doubly Committed Subarterial (DCSA) Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). This left his parents absolutely stunned and they couldn’t imagine a life without him.
Distraught and desperate, they wanted to do everything they could to save the precious life of their child.DCSA VSDs are one of the least common types of CHDs. It is located beneath the aortic and pulmonary valves, accounting for about 5-7% of all VSD autopsy findings. They are often complicated by aortic regurgitation resulting from aortic valve herniation into the defect. The main characteristic of this type of VSD is its anatomical proximity to the aortic and pulmonary valves, and the association with progressive aortic valve prolapse, as well as corresponding aortic insufficiency.
PCHF provides the highest quality of care for children with heart disease, irrespective of their financial means. Each year around 50,000 children are born with CHD in Pakistan and a large majority of these children are unable to get the treatment required due to lack of facilities, personnel and the high costs involved. That is where PCHF steps in.Ghulam Hassan’s family brought him to PCHF, all the way from Chah Lohar Wala, located in District Dera Ghazi Khan. They had immensely high hopes for their child, and were looking to end their unbearable hardship. Ghulam Hassan’s father, Shokat Hussain, works as a labourer, and his mother, Nosheen Bibi, is a housewife. Thankfully, their prayers were answered as the surgery was scheduled through a swift, smooth and extremely efficient process, funded entirely by PCHF.
Ghulam Hassan’s surgery was blessedly a success, and after a few days in the hospital under the special care of our brilliant team of healthcare professionals, he was discharged. Shokat and Nosheen are now proud parents of a CHD warrior.PCHF made a real difference in the lives of Ghulam Hassan and his family.
