Sumaira Bibi: A 4-Year-Old CHD Warrior

Since our inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have helped 2398 children get heart surgery. This is the amazing success story of a remarkably spirited 4-year-old Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) survivor, Sumaira Bibi. As a blossoming child, Sumaira was diagnosed with a CHD known as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). This left her parents distraught and distressed, searching for ways to save their little baby.
ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of your heart (atria). The hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. A large, long-standing ASD can damage the heart and lungs.
We provide the highest quality of care for children with heart disease, irrespective of their financial means. Each year around 60,000 children are born with CHD in Pakistan, and a large majority of these children are unable to get the treatment required, due to lack of facilities, personnel and the high costs involved. That is where we step in.
Sumaira Bibi’s family brought her to us, all the way from Chakwal. They came full of expectations, looking to us to fulfil their wish. Sumaira’s father, Jahangeer Khan, works at a general store, and her mother, Hukam Jana, is a housewife. Thankfully, their prayers were answered as the surgery was scheduled through a swift, smooth and extremely efficient process. Blessedly, Sumaira’s procedure, an ASD Closure, was a success, and after a few days at the hospital under the special care of our brilliant team of healthcare professionals, she was discharged. Jahangeer and Hukam are now proud parents of a CHD warrior.
We made a real difference in the lives of Sumaira Bibi and her family. Together, they can now dream of living a wonderful life.
