Suleman’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,427 heart procedures. This is the success story of 16-year-old Suleman, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA).
TGA is a serious and rare heart defect in which the 2 main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. It changes the way blood circulates through the body, leaving a shortage of oxygen in the blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Patients face serious complications, or even death, without treatment.
For Suleman, it all started with a bout of fever and coughing following his birth in his hometown of Peshawar. His family then took him to a local doctor for what they thought would just be a routine check-up. Little did they know the extent of the underlying problem.
To get to the root cause of the issue at hand, Suleman also underwent an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound. This revealed the presence of a life-threatening CHD and that life-saving surgery was immediately needed.
Even with limited financial resources, Suleman’s father, who works as a teacher, was able to get the surgery done. However, this would not be the end of their woes unfortunately.
Years later, Suleman would need a second surgery. Also adding to their sorrow was the estimated cost of required treatment. Suleman’s family needed financial support.
In the search for options, the family eventually reached Lahore where they met renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon and PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member, Dr. M. Asim Khan. When he was informed about the dire situation, providing a source of hope, he referred them to us.
Suleman’s father contacted us and our team swiftly called the family in for a meeting. We informed them that when it comes to saving lives of deserving children suffering from CHD like Suleman, we are among the top organizations in Pakistan.
We have a generous donor base, who we are grateful beyond measure to, and we were going to do everything possible to save Suleman’s life. The family was now immensely hopeful and following a quick financial evaluation, the surgery was scheduled.
It would take place at one of our partner hospitals, Ittefaq Hosital (Trust) in Lahore. Dr. Asim would carry out the complex surgery known as the Fontan procedure alongside a brilliant team of healthcare professionals. All other formalities were also taken care of.
After such prolonged distress, the future was looking better for Suleman and his family who had been supporting him throughout his battle with CHD. With a fighter’s spirit, he would now go in for surgery.
The family was told that he was in the best of hands and after the completion of the surgery, we were thrilled to inform them that Suleman had finally overcome CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who would undoubtedly have an unquenchable desire for life itself.
Suleman’s loved ones were all overwhelmed. They felt like a huge weight had been lifted off their shoulders and all they were looking forward to now was being able to live a normal life together. They were full of appreciation for our team and such words go a long way in inspiring us to continue our work.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
