Seerat’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,330 child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 5-year-old Seerat, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).
An ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. A large, long-standing ASD can damage both the heart and lungs. Symptoms include irregular heartbeats, fatigue, swelling etc.
Seerat was just a one-year-old infant when the hole in her heart was diagnosed. Her family members, who live in Sargodha, noticed that she was suffering from bouts of coughing and so they took her to a local doctor.
Following a thorough medical check-up, including an Echocardiography (ECHO) which is a cardiac ultrasound, her potentially life-threatening condition was diagnosed. Not only did this news leave the entire family extremely distressed, but this would also mark the beginning of an initially troubling journey.
For the next few years, the family would have to travel to various cities in the country searching for both treatment options and financial support. Seerat’s father works as a shopkeeper and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 5.
After a search that lasted for years, eventually her father’s fortunes changed when he came across a doctor in Sargodha who recommended our organization. This would be the start his could be considered a life-altering moment for Seerat and her whole family.
We are among the premier organizations in the country when it comes to saving lives of deserving children like Seerat who are suffering from CHD. Her father, did not waste any time and immediately scheduled a meeting with our team in Lahore.
He was told that we would do our absolute best to save his daughter’s life and after financially evaluating the case, we would take care of almost all of the required funds. Seerat’s planned treatment was a procedure called an ASD Closure.
A highly experienced team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board and the surgery would be carried out at one of our partner hospitals, the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH). The family was told that Seerat was in the best of hands.
After experiencing years of anguish, we were thrilled to be the ones to inform the family that the surgery was a resounding success! Seerat was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who had a second chance at living a normal life.
The family was overwhelmed with emotion and felt grateful beyond measure to our entire team. Seerat’s father, at the time of discharge mentioned how he was looking forward to living a life filled with happiness alongside his daughter and that the difficult times were now well and truly behind them.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
