Saif’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,944 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 5-year-old Saif Ullah, who was diagnosed with aCongenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Saif is his parents’ only child. Their whole world revolves around him and so when he was diagnosed with CHD when he was around 2 years old, it was like their entire lives had turned upside down.
The local doctors in their hometown of Mansehra (KPK) informed them that Saif needed life-saving treatment that was unavailable there. In the search for other options, they first travelled to Peshawar.
However, because of various factors including being unable to afford the heart surgery, Saif’s father who works as a petrol pump worker, could not get his son treated. A few years passed by and his fortunes still did not change.
He never gave up through and eventually came across a distant relative who informed him about our organization. This would be the beginning of his luck changing as we are among the very best when it comes to saving lives of deserving children in Pakistan born with CHD.
Saif’s father scheduled a meeting with our team in Lahore immediately and after meeting our evaluation team, he was told that we could financially support his child’s heart surgery. After struggling for such a long time, he was thrilled to hear this news. Now, there was hope.
The surgery was arranged for just a few weeks later. Dr. M. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon and PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member, would carry out the procedure at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore. This is a partner hospital of PCHF.
A world-class team of allied healthcare professionals was also on board and Saif’s family was told that he was in safe hands. All they had to do now was stay calm, pray and encourage Saif.
A few hours later, it was our privilege to inform Saif’s loved ones that his surgery was a resounding success and he had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’. With some heartfelt care, we had reshaped their world.
Saif’s family finally has a life filled with special moments to look forward to. They were all grateful beyond measure to our time and his father at the time of discharge mentioned how he hoped that Saif would go on to become a doctor who is very considerate. We wish him every success in life.
