Roop’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,507 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 12-year-old Roop, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF).
In TOF, 4 related heart defects affect blood flow. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs. Low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body and not enough oxygen can reach body tissues. Children with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the skin, lips and fingernails.
Roop was experiencing breathing problems right after birth in her home city of Dera Ghazi Khan. The doctors there suspected an underlying heart condition and so she had to be examined. Roop’s parents were extremely worried.
She had an Echocardiography (ECHO) done, which is a cardiac ultrasound. The results of this test confirmed that she had a potentially fatal CHD. Roop’s parents were heartbroken.
They could not imagine a life without their daughter. In this immensely distressful situation though, they somehow gathered up the courage needed to actively start searching for treatment options.
What made matters even more complicated was the fact that the required treatment was relatively expensive. Roop’s father, who works as a labourer and supports a family of 7 on his own, found it unaffordable. He was in desperate need of financial support.
Unfortunately, this journey would last for years before the family came across a doctor who recommended us, an organization dedicated to transforming lives of deserving families like theirs. After so much heartache, this is when their fortunes would start to change.
They contacted us immediately and we were happy to schedule a meeting with them. Once they came to us and our team got the chance to evaluate the case, they were told that we would be able to financially support Roop’s heart surgery.
This was thanks to our incredible donor base, which consists of both organizations and individuals who believe in our cause. We are grateful beyond measure to them for being alongside us.
We swiftly took care of all hospital-related arrangements and scheduled the procedure known as a Total Correction at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore, one of our partner hospitals. A brilliant team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board and Roop’s family was told she was in the safest of hands.
During the hours in which the surgery was taking place, Roop’s loved ones remained a symbol of strength. Once it was over, we were thrilled to inform them that Roop had overcome CHD! She was now a ‘CHD Warrior’. Her every heartbeat will now have a touch of life’s joy.
Her entire family, especially her mother, were overjoyed. They were constantly thanking us for saving Roop’s life and wished us continued success. Her mother also said that she hopes that Roop grows up to become a doctor so she can help others like we helped her. We sincerely hope that holds true.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
