Mahad’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 6,232 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 8-year-old Mahad, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF).
In TOF, 4 related heart defects affect blood flow. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs. Low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body and not enough oxygen can reach body tissues. Children with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the skin, lips and fingernails.
Just a few days after birth, Mahad’s parents took him to a doctor in Kashmir, where they reside, because of his bluish lips and fingernails. He had to undergo an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, and this confirmed the presence of a life-threatening CHD.
The family was heartbroken by the news and to make matters worse, the required treatment was unavailable in their hometown. They were sent to a hospital in Rawalpindi to discuss the further course of action.
The treatment there lasted for a few years before they were told that surgery was now necessary. To make matters even more complicated, they could not afford the heart surgery and needed financial support. That’s where we come in.
A well-wisher told the family about our organization, which is among the very best when it comes to saving lives of deserving children born with CHD. This would be the beginning of their lives finally turning around.
After contacting our team in Lahore, they were immediately called in for an evaluation. Just a short while after the first meeting, we were pleased to inform them that we would be able to financially support Mahad’s treatment.
This was thanks to our incredible donor base, both organizations and individuals who we are grateful beyond measure to for supporting us. Without them, we would not be where we are today.
Within a few months, the surgery would take place at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. Dr. M. Asim Khan, a renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon and PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member, would carry out the procedure alongside his brilliant team.
As the surgery was taking place and young Mahad was fighting for his life, his loved ones were constantly praying for him. They were told that he was in the best of hands and once the procedure was complete, we were thrilled to inform them that he had overcome CHD! Mahad was now a ‘CHD Warrior’.
His heartbeat was now a celebration of his courage and the entire family was elated. At the time of discharge, his father mentioned how thankful he was for everyone at PCHF being so considerate. He hopes for Mahad to become a doctor and great human being. We wish him every success.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
