Jameel’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,573 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 12-year-old Jameel, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF).
In TOF, 4 related heart defects affect blood flow. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs. Low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body and not enough oxygen can reach body tissues. Children with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the skin, lips and fingernails.
After Jameel’s birth in his home city of Dera Ghazi Khan, signs and symptoms of CHD started appearing in him. His parents, not having any idea about the root cause, were distressed about his condition.
As an infant, Jameel had to undergo an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound. His doctor suspected the presence of a CHD and the results of this test confirmed it.
Jameel’s parents were told to travel to Lahore for treatment options. His father, who works as a farmer, would not only need financial support for his treatment but even had to borrow money to be able to travel.
Years went by and Jameel’s health worsened. His father would go back and forth between cities but had no luck when it came to finding financial support. One day, Jameel’s siblings discovered our organization’s Facebook page. This would be the beginning of everything changing for them.
The family got in touch with our team and we told them to bring Jameel to us as soon as they possibly could. Now filled with renewed hope, they swiftly brought him to be evaluated.
Once that process was complete, we informed them that we would be able to financially support Jameel’s heart surgery. This was thanks to our remarkable donors who we are deeply grateful to.
The surgery would take place at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. All arrangements were taken care of and a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals was to carry out the procedure. In terms of preparation, everything possible had been done.
As Jameel was fighting for a second chance at a normal life, his family remained calm and kept praying. After the completion of the heart procedure, it was our privilege to inform them that Jameel had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ whose inner strength helped him prevail over adversity.
His loved ones were thankful beyond measure to us. All of them had overcome this hardship together and a fresh start was on the horizon. His father said that he hoped that he could now give Jameel a quality education so that he could go on to chase his dreams. We wish them all the very best!
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
