Haya’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,215 child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 6-month-old infant Haya, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Born to a family in Charsadda (KPK), what was supposed to be the happiest moment in the lives of her loved ones, quickly turned into one of anguish. The doctors noticed that Haya had cyanosis, bluish-purple skin colour, and suspected the presence of a CHD.
She then immediately had to go to Peshawar for an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound. The results of this test confirmed that Haya had a life-threatening CHD. This was devastating news for her whole family.
To make matters worse, they were told that the treatment was relatively expensive. Haya’s father, who works as a farmer and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 8, found it unaffordable. He was in desperate need of financial support.
Searching for treatment options, his resolve was tested but he had no intention of giving up hope. He even went all the way to Sindh, however, was left disappointed. After coming to Lahore though, his fortunes were about to change.
He visited Dr. M. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon who also happens to be a PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member. After listening to the whole ordeal, Haya’s father was told by Dr. Asim to visit our Head Office.
Being among Pakistan’s premier organizations in the field of CHD, we have tremendous experience when it comes to giving deserving children like Haya a second chance at living a normal life. We are also blessed with an incredible donor base, including both organizations and individuals who believe in us.
When Haya’s father learned of this, he immediately saw a glimmer of hope and scheduled an appointment with our team. Once he came and the case was swiftly evaluated, we were pleased to inform him that Haya’s surgery would be scheduled at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore.
Dr. Asim would carry out the procedure himself with a brilliant team of CHD healthcare professionals alongside him. All other formalities were also taken care of. Haya’s family was told to remain calm and strong.
The treatment lasted for a few hours which were the most difficult of their lives. Haya fought for her life and following the completion of her surgery, we were thrilled to inform her family that she had defeated CHD! She was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who could grow up believing in the goodness of others.
Her loved ones, especially her father who commendably managed to arrange a portion of the required funds, were thoroughly satisfied with the whole process and thanked us wholeheartedly. We hope that they go on to live a life filled with special moments with Haya.
