Haris’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 6,192 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 5-year-old Haris, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Right after birth, Haris was diagnosed with a life-threatening CHD. At a time that is usually one of pure bliss, his family was left heartbroken by the news. They were told to take him to a hospital in Peshawar immediately.
Over there they were told to go to Lahore. Haris then had his first surgery done and his parents were told that he would need a second surgery later in life. Till then, Haris would still have difficulties breathing and walking.
When the time for a second surgery arrived, the family needed financial support. They met Dr. M. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon who also happens to be a PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member. He told them about our organization, which is one of the very best in the field of CHD.
Our team was contacted and called them in immediately for an evaluation. This was a quick process after which we informed them that we would be able to schedule the heart surgery. This was thanks to our incredible donor base that we are grateful beyond measure for.
The surgery would take place at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. All formalities were taken care of and a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board.The family was told that Haris was in the very best of hands.
During the surgery, when Haris was fighting for his life, his loved ones who were present remained calm and were praying throughout. Once it was over, we were thrilled to inform them that he had overcome CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ with a stronger heart.
Along with his family members, Haris could now move forward towards a healthier future. At the time of discharge, his father mentioned how thankful they all were and how happy he was to see his son doing so much better. We wish them the very best in life.
