Hadi’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,364 child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 7-year-old Hadi, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA).
TGA is a serious and rare heart defect in which the 2 main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. It changes the way blood circulates through the body, leaving a shortage of oxygen in the blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Patients face serious complications, or even death, without treatment.
Right after birth in his home city of Sahiwal, Hadi started experiencing symptoms of CHD. Along with having breathing difficulties, he also had bluish-purple skin, lips and nails which is known as cyanosis.
Following a check-up with a local doctor, an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, was recommended. The results of this test confirmed the presence of TGA. With Hadi facing a threat to his life, his parents were left in a state of absolute shock.
Even though this was an extremely difficult situation for the family, they had to push through adversity and immediately start searching for treatment options. They started locally but eventually had to make their way to Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore.
This is where they met Dr. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, who also happens to be a PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member. When the family was informed about the estimated cost of the required treatment, their woes were further amplified.
Hadi’s father works in construction and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 4. He would need financial support for his son’s heart surgery. After listening to his ordeal, Dr. Asim referred the family to us. This would be considered a defining moment of their lives.
We are among the premier organizations in Pakistan when it comes to saving lives of deserving children suffering from CHD like Hadi. His father wasted to time whatsoever in contacting us and scheduling a meeting.
After a financial evaluation by our team, we told the family that we would be able to financially support Hadi’s heart surgery thanks to our incredible donor base, both organizations and individuals who believe in our cause. Commendably, his father was also able to arrange some of the required funds.
All the formalities were swiftly taken care of and the procedure was scheduled at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust). Dr. Asim would carry out what is called the Rastelli Procedure with a world-class team of allied healthcare professionals alongside him.
As Hadi was about to go in for surgery, his family was assured that everything possible had been done in terms of preparation. All they had to do now was try to stay calm and pray.
A few very difficult hours later, it was our privilege to inform the family that Hadi had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ with a normal life and a better world to look forward to.
The family was thrilled and tremendously satisfied with their experience here that helped them cope with such a stressful situation. Hadi’s father, at the time of discharge, mentioned that all he hoped for now is for his son to become a good person who helps people like we do. We wish the whole family the very best.
