Fatima’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,711 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 6-month-old infant Fatima, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tricuspid Atresia (TA).
TA is a birth defect in which the valve that controls blood flow from the right upper chamber of the heart to the right lower chamber doesn’t form at all. In children with this heart defect, blood isn’t able to flow properly through the heart and to the rest of the body.
Right after Fatima’s birth, everyone noticed that she had cyanosis (bluish skin). Her doctor then had Fatima undergo an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound. The results of this revealed the presence of a potentially fatal CHD.
Fatima’s parents were now shocked at a time which is normally one of immense joy for a family. They were told that Fatima needed heart surgery as soon as possible and so she was taken to the prestigious Children’s Hospital in Lahore.
The queue over there was too long though and Fatima’s parents were under a lot of stress. A well-wisher of theirs then told them about our organization. This would be the beginning of their fortunes changing.
They called our team immediately and scheduled an OPD appointment at our flagship project. Following our swift evaluation process, the family was told that we would be able to schedule Fatima’s heart surgery.
Her father, who works in real estate in their home city of Lahore and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 5, needed financial support as well and thanks to our generous donor base, we were able to arrange most of the required funds for Fatima’s surgery. Commendably, her family also contributed even with limited resources.
With all formalities also taken care of, Fatima’s surgery was scheduled at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. The family was told that she was in safe hands and that they should just pray for the procedure to be successful.
Following a few very distressful hours for them, it was our privilege to inform them Fatima’s loved ones that she had defeated CHD! She was now a ‘CHD Warrior’. Just as hope seemed to slip away, we helped Fatima find the strength that she needed.
When the news broke that Fatima’s heart surgery was a resounding success, her family members were elated. Her father, overcome with emotion, at the time of discharge said that he tremendously satisfied with his whole experience here. He now hoped that he would be able to help his daughter become a lawyer when she grows up.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
