Awais’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 6,045 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 4-year-old Awais. He was born with a Univentricular Heart, a severe and rare CHD where both atria drain into a single, functional or dominant ventricle instead of 2, limiting blood circulation.
Survival for children with this complex condition is limited without early diagnosis and surgical intervention. Symptoms include cyanosis (bluish-purple skin), congestive heart failure etc.
Just 28 days following his birth, Awais had to undergo surgery at MMC Hospital in Peshawar for his potentially life-threatening CHD. His parents were told that he would need further treatment in the future.
Following the first surgery, Awais was still suffering from signs and symptoms of CHD such as cyanosis (bluish skin), breathing difficulties etc. His family was distressed and to make matters worse, they were going to find it difficult to afford the final procedure needed to save his life.
His father, who is a doctor from Hangu (KPK), is the sole breadwinner in his family and he needed financial support. He was searching for options and when one of the doctors who had treated Awais found out, he referred the family to our organization. This would mark the start of a turnaround.
We are among the very best when it comes to treating deserving children suffering from CHD like Awais. This is largely thanks to our incredible donors, who we are grateful beyond measure to.
Once the family contacted us, our team called them in for an evaluation immediately. When that was done, we were pleased to tell them that the surgery would be scheduled within days. Their years of hardship were about to end.
All formalities were taken care of and the surgery was scheduled at Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO), one of our partner hospitals in Lahore. A world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board.
While Awais was in surgery, battling for his life, his loved ones were continuously praying for him. After a few very challenging hours, it was our privilege to inform them that he had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who could go on to thrive in life.
His family was overjoyed that the surgery was successful. Before Awais got discharged, his father mentioned that their experience with us was great and that he wished us continued success in our mission. He also said that he wants his son to become a doctor. May that dream become a reality.
