Ahmad’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,137 child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 3-year-old Ahmad, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).
An ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. A large, long-standing ASD can damage both the heart and lungs. Symptoms include irregular heartbeats, fatigue, swelling etc.
Ahmad and his family are from Okara, Punjab. Following his birth, his parents noticed that he was having breathing difficulties and they were told by doctors in Okara to take him to a better hospital in the nearby city of Sahiwal.
It was there that Ahmad underwent medical check-ups, and after an Echocardiography (ECHO), he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition. For the entire family, including Ahmad’s 3 sisters, this was extremely distressing news.
Adding to their woes was the fact that the required treatment was relatively expensive and Ahmad’s father, who works as a security guard, found it unaffordable. In his search for different options, he made his way to Lahore.
A friend of his, who is a doctor working at a government hospital, after listening to his family’s whole ordeal told him about our organization. This would be the beginning of their lives changing.
Sensing a glimmer of hope, Ahmad’s father contacted us immediately. He was asked to send us some relevant documents and after going through them, they were asked to come see us.
Being an organization dedicated to saving lives of deserving children suffering from CHD, we were going to do our utmost to help Ahmad as well. In our first meeting with his family, that is exactly what they were told.
Following a thorough evaluation of the case, the surgery was scheduled at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. We were fully sponsoring the procedure and all formalities were taken care of.
A brilliant team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board and Ahmad’s family was told that he was in the best of hands. What they had to do now was stay strong and patient during what would surely be the toughest few hours of their lives.
Once the complex procedure called an ASD Closure was complete, we were thrilled to inform Ahmad’s family that he had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ with a brighter future awaiting him.
His whole family, especially his father who had gone through so much, was overcome with emotion. He was so happy and told us that he wished for his son to become a doctor so he could help people like we do. Such words are always a driving force for us. We wish them all the best in life.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
