Abu Bakar’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 6,255 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 9-month-old infant Abu Bakar, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
3 months after birth, Abu Bakar was diagnosed with his potentially life-threatening heart condition. The entire family, who are from Lahore, was devastated by the news. Especially when they were told that a relatively expensive surgery was the only way to save Abu Bakar’s life.
His father, a Mosque Imam who solely supports the family, needed financial support and started searching for options immediately. It was quite fortunate for him that a friend of his knew about our organization and guided him to contact us.
Once he got in touch with our team, we called them in for an evaluation. The patient’s Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, was done again at our flagship project, Pakistan’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute.
Following that, a financial evaluation was done as well after which we were pleased to inform them that we would be able to financially support Abu Bakar’s heart surgery. This was possible largely because of our incredible donors who we are grateful beyond measure for.
The surgery would take place at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals. All formalities were taken care of and a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals, including renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. M. Asim Khan, was on board.
The family was told that he was in the best of hands and that all they had to do now was pray. The surgery lasted for a few hours during which they all remained strong. After it was over, it was our privilege to inform them that Abu Bakar had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who had beat the odds.
His loved ones were overwhelmed with joy. At the time of discharge, his father said that words could not describe how he happy he truly felt and that all he wanted to say was that he wishes for our continued success. We hope they go on to have lives filled with happiness together.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD, as a Board Member and Brand Ambassador of our flagship project, Pakistan’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute.
