Abdullah’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 6,074 child heart procedures. This is the success story of 7-year-old Abdullah, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
A VSD is a birth defect in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the 2 lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This leads to extra blood being pumped into the lungs and forces the heart to work harder. If this is not repaired the risk of heart failure or other complications like a stroke increases.
Around a month after Abdullah’s birth, his parents noticed that he was having breathing difficulties. Following a check-up that included an Echocardiogram (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, the presence of a CHD was confirmed.
When his parents were told what this meant and that their son’s life was in danger, they were heartbroken. Their doctor in Peshawar told them to start searching for treatment options as soon as possible.
What added to their woes was the fact that the required treatment was relatively expensive. Abdullah’s father, who works as a teacher in the district of Karak (KPK) and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 4, found it unaffordable.
He travelled to various cities and eventually, a doctor in Peshawar told him to visit Dr. M. Asim Khan, who then informed him about our organization. He immediately called us and scheduled a meeting with our team. Years after they first received the devastating news, their fortunes were finally about to change.
We are among the very best when it comes to saving lives of deserving children suffering from CHD in Pakistan. This is mainly because of our incredible donor base, both organizations and individuals who we are grateful beyond measure to.
Once Abdullah’s case was evaluated, we were pleased to inform his family that we would be able to financially support his heart surgery. Within a few weeks, the procedure would take place at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) Lahore, which is one of our partner hospitals.
With a brilliant team of CHD healthcare professionals on board, Abdullah’s family was told that all they had to do now was pray for the surgery’s success. The hours that followed would be the most difficult ones of their lives.
After the completion of the surgery, we were thrilled to inform Abdullah’s loved ones that he had overcome CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ with a spirit that was shining brighter than ever.
All his family members were overjoyed. At the time of discharge, his grandfather mentioned how happy they all were with their experience. He wished us continued success and said that he hopes PCHF will always be a genuine source of hope for deserving families like Abdullah’s.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
