Abdullah’s Success Story
Since inception in 2012, we at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), have financially supported 5,180 child heart surgeries. This is the success story of 7-year-old Abdullah, who was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tricuspid Atresia (TA).
TA is a birth defect in which the valve that controls blood flow from the right upper chamber of the heart to the right lower chamber doesn’t form at all. In children with this heart defect, blood isn’t able to flow properly through the heart and to the rest of the body.
Abdullah’s family is from Nawabshah, a city known as the heart of Sindh. Just 2 or 3 months after birth, his parents started noticing that he was experiencing breathing difficulties and his skin also started to turn blue.
They took him to a local hospital, not knowing the extent of the problem. After undergoing a thorough medical check-up, the doctor suspected the presence of a CHD. This was confirmed through an Echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound.
This left Abdullah’s parents in a state of absolute shock. Discovering that he had a potentially life-threatening heart condition changed their lives in an instant. They also learned that the required procedure was relatively expensive.
Abdullah’s father, who works as a shopkeeper and solely supports his family of 5, found it unaffordable. He started searching for different options and eventually ended up contacting our Volunteer CEO, Mr. Farhan Ahmad. This was what you can truly call a life-altering moment.
The family was asked to come visit us as soon as possible. Sensing that this could be the beginning of their lives changing, they made their way to us immediately and met our team who were to evaluate the case.
Our organization has immense experience when it comes to saving lives of deserving children suffering from CHD. Also being blessed with a remarkable donor base, both organizations and individuals who believe in our cause, Abdullah and his family had come to the right place.
After the swift process of evaluation was complete, Abdullah’s surgery was scheduled at one of our partner hospitals, Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO). All hospital and accommodation related formalities were also taken care of.
With a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals to carry out the procedure, Abdullah’s family was assured that everything possible had been done in terms of preparation. They were asked to just pray for everything to go smoothly.
The complex surgery lasted for a few hours which were incredibly distressful for Abdullah’s family. However, they knew he had a fighting chance and kept on believing. Once it was complete, it was our privilege to inform them that Abdullah had overcome CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ and after a period of despair, a new light had dawned on him.
His entire family was overjoyed. They felt grateful beyond measure to us and wished us continued success. Abdullah’s father mentioned how he hoped that his son would go on to live a normal life and become a pilot when he grows up. May all his dreams come true.
For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we at PCHF – charity you can trust with all your heart, are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child born with CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.
